Cougars Stay Perfect,
Defeat Flora and Patoka
The Cougars
kept their undefeated status intact by winning a pair of games this week, the first, a 7-2 victory against the Flora Wolves
on Monday and the second, an 8-3 win over the Patoka Warriors on Tuesday.
Monday's game at Flora was a dogfight until the sixth inning when the Cougars scored
four runs to extend their single digit lead and give them some breathing room headed into the Wolves' last two at-bats.
The big inning started when Miles Yates was hit by a pitch and Tyler Burns and Matt
Hicks both walked to load the bases. Brian Wodtka chopped a high hopper to 3rd and Yates beat the throw to the plate to score
the first run.
Brock Adams drove in the second run on a groundout to the right side and Nick Jones
picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center. The fourth run scored on Spencer Patton's single to left, his second hit and
RBI of the game.
Although the Cougars stranded 10 runners and only had six hits on the day, the hits
they did get, came at crucial times.
The Cougars first two runs came in the second when Adams, Jones, and Shane Landreth
all reached safely on consecutive walks and Trey Garrett laced a 1-out single up the middle for 2 RBI's.
After the Wolves tied it up in the fourth, the Cougars added one of their own in
the fifth on a pair of walks from Wodtka and Jones, an Adams single, and an RBI single by Patton.
Burns started and worked the first six innings to get the win, allowing both runs
on 4 hits, 7 strikeouts, and 3 walks. Patton finished things up in the 7th, giving up one hit and striking out three.
Tuesday's home game with Patoka saw the Cougars roar out to and early 6-0 lead after
three innings by playing long ball with the Patoka pitchers.
After Garrett led of the second with a home run to left, Jones walked and stole
second. Patton then walked and after they both pulled off the double steal, Jones would score when the Warriors' second baseman
booted Burns' two-out grounder.
The fireworks began in the 3rd when Wodtka started the frame with his second hit
of the game and Adams followed with his third homer of the season. Garrett then picked up his second hit and not to be outdone,
Nick Jones belted his first homer over the boards in left.
The Cougars tacked on a single run in the 4th on Wodtka's third hit, and second
double of the day and Garrett's third hit, an RBI single through the box to center. The eighth and final run would score in
the 6th on a Wodtka walk and Garrett's fourth hit, an RBI double off the wall in right.
Not only did Garrett pick up four hits for the offense, he was the starting pitcher
for the Cougars and recorded his second win by going the first four innnings, allowing no runs on no hits, 5 strikeouts, and
1 walk. Patton worked the 5th and 6th innings and Miles Yates came on in the 7th to close things out.
The Cougars take to the field again this Friday when the host the Carlyle Indians
