Cougars Take Two More,
Whip Salem and Newton
The Cougars picked-up two more wins to make it four wins in four days as they defeated Salem 7-5 on Wednesday
and Newton 10-8 on Thursday.
Against Salem, freshman pitcher Tanner Bushue ran his record to 6-0 and Spencer Patton hammered two home runs
to lead the Cougars to the win.
The Wildcats, scoring all five of their runs in the first inning, were shutout the rest of the way as Bushue
scattered six hits on six strikeouts and one walk.
Offensively, the Cougars got a big lift in the 3rd when Patton launched his first homer, a three-run shot,
to put them within two.
Then in the fourth, after a Wildcat error and a pair of singles from Robert Slater and Blake Lane, Patton
struck again. This time the round-tripper was good for four runs and a Cougar two-run lead.
Lane added another single and Nick Simmons chipped in with a pair of safeties to help lead the offensive charge.
On Thursday, the Cougars traveled to Newton and came away with a wild 10-8 win.
Starting pitcher Wade Crain hung on for 6 2/3 innings before giving way to Patton with one on and two outs
in the seventh. Crain upped his record to 5-0 and Patton notched his second save of season.
After falling behind 3-0 after three innings, the Cougars finally got things going in their half of the 4th
when they tied things up with the help of an Eagle error, singles from Simmons and King, and a double from Mulvany.
The Eagles responded with two runs of their own to re-take the lead 5-3 in their half of the inning, but the
Cougars immediately responded by exploding four five runs in the 5th.
Highlights of the inning were back-to-back home runs from Mulvany and Simmons and an RBI single by Crain.
The Eagles kept things interesting by scoring twice in the sixth to make it 8-7, but the Cougars added two
more in the 7th to put the game away.
On Saturday, the Cougars travel to Carmi to battle one of the top Class A teams in the state in a 10:00 AM
doubleheader.
