Cougars Top Flora
For Regional Crown
For the fifth time in the last seven years, the Cougars have won a regional championship.
Senior hurler Spencer Patton pitched seven strong innings and the offense did just enough to pull off a 6-1 victory over the Flora Wolves in the title game.
Patton allowed just one run, a solo homer in the 7th when the Cougars were up 6-0, in his complete game performance. Up to that point, he totally dominated the Flora hitters with 14 strikeouts and one hit. He finished the game with sixteen K's on three hits and one walk.
Offensively, the Cougars got on the board in the second when they scored the game's first run on Wade Crain's bases-loaded walk. But, they missed several opportunities to add to that lead when they stranded eight baserunners through the first four innings.
But things changed in the fifth. After James Gile singled to lead off the frame, Nick Simmons rapped a one-out single and Shea Burton reached on an infield error to load the bases.
The stage was now set for pinch hitter Tommy Daugherty. After he worked the Flora pitcher to a full count, he bounced a single past third to drive home a pair of runs and the Cougars found themselves up 3-0.
With runners now on second and third, Cougar senior Robert Slater stepped to the dish and drove the final nail in the coffin when he launched a 1-0 fastball over the leftfield fence for a 3-run homer.
Along with the home run, Slater added a single to compliment a pair of hits from Patton (two doubles) and Burton to lead the offensive charge.
The Cougars now advance to play in the Kaskaskia College Sectional next Thursday when the face the Breese Central Cougars at 4:30 PM.
Congratulations Cougars!!!
