Cougars Come Up Short
In Sectional Semi-final

A very successful season came to a screaching halt when the Cougars were gunned down 11-1 by the Breese Central Cougars on Thursday in the Kaskaskia College Sectional semi-final game.

After scoring a run in their first at-bat, Breese sent 12 men to plate in the third against Cougar starter Spencer Patton and by inning's end found themselves in control with an 8-0 lead.

The uprising started with a single to right by the #2 hitter for Breese, followed by a grounder over the bag at third for a double by the #3 man in their order.

After an intentional walk to load the bases, Patton induced a grounder to the right side that Shae Burton fielded and threw home for the force play to record out number one.

But a single between third and short scored two runs to make it 3-0 and the third run of the inning came home on a fielding error.

An infield single loaded the bases and run number four scored when Patton walked the #9 hitter. After a pass ball and another run scored, the Breese lead-off hitter laced a single to right to continue the barrage.

Patton stopped the bleeding by stiking out the final two hitter of the inning, but the damage was done.

The Cougars did make some noise in their half of third when they scored their only run of the game, but some tough luck outs prevented them from a possible big inning.

Burton led off with a single and after back-to-back line drives that were caught by the Breese outfielders, Wade Crain and Blake Lane singled to drive Burton home from second.

With runners now at first and second and two out, Patton launched a long fly ball to dead center that was caught by the diving Breese centerfielder near the 400 foot sign to end the threat.

Breese tacked on their final three runs in the fifth on a pair of hits and three walks to push the score to the final 11-1 margin and when the Cougars failed to score in their half of the inning, the game was called via the 10-run rule.

Although this one didn't end the way the way the Cougars wanted it to, the overall season was very successful.

The team finished with a 25-9 record and did it competing against some of the top competition in the state. The win total equaled the most victories for a season in school history while adding another regional championship plaque to the SCHS trophy case.

Congratulations Cougars!!!

and thanks for the memories.
