The Cougars made their annual trip to Carmi on Saturday and came away with a pair of wins as they bombed the Bulldogs 21-9 and 21-5 in the doubleheader affair.

 

In game one, the Cougars banged out 19 hits and Ryan Gesell and Larry Schoreck teamed up on the mound to lead the way.

 

Gesell pitched the first 3 1/3 to get the win allowing just one hit, but control problems finally got the best of him as he allowed 6 runs, most of them coming on the 10 walks that he issued.

 

Schoreck came on in relief and picked up the save allowing the final three runs on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts.

 

Offensively, the Cougars were led by Gesell as he collected four hits, one a run-scoring double in the 2nd and another a 2-run homer in the first. He finished with 4 RBI's for the game.

 

Cole Armstrong also had a big game as he led things off in the 1st by smoking a home run to left on the first pitch he saw. He then went on to add a pair of singles to add to his hit total while Dylan Sill also cracked 3 hits along with 3 RBI's.

 

Bret Pitts joined in on the fun as well with a pair of singles, a double, and 3 RBI's.

 

Game two was much like the first as the Cougars raced out to 12-0 lead after two innings and never looked back.

 

Reid Drewes led the offensive attack with 3 hits and 2 RBI's and Gesell blasted his second homer of the day when he rifled a line drive over the right-centerfield fence in the 5th for a grand slam.

 

Armstrong, Kyle Monical, and Tyler Gillett all added two hits and three RBI's in the offensive onslaught.

 

Dylan Sill started and pitched four innings to grab the win and Dererk Harmeier tossed a scoreless 5th to close it out.

 

The Cougars are back in action next Wednesday when they host the Olney Tigers at 4:30 PM.
