Patoka Uses Longball
To Top Cougars

The Patoka Warriors muscled up early and raced out to an 11-0 lead after three innings, and then withstood a furious Cougar rally to hang on for an 11-8 win in the finals of the Edwards County Sectional on Saturday.

The Warriors jumped on Cougar starter Ryan Gesell with four first-inning runs, two coming on a one-out, two-run homer from Luke Murfin. They then tacked on two more after a pair of walks, an RBI single, and a throwing error.

The real damage came in the third when the Warriors plated seven runs. John Spicer cracked a one-out solo home run to center to make it 5-0 and after a flyball out, a single, and two fielding errors by the Cougars, up stepped Drew Baldridge with the bases loaded.

He promptly laced  a two-run double into the rightfield gap and after Tyler Gillett relieved Gesell and walked the first hitter he faced, Murfin struck again. This time he blasted Gillett's 1-0 offering over the fence in right for a grand slam and the Cougars trailed 11-0.

But the Cougars came roaring back in their half of the third. Three straight walks by Murfin loaded the bases and the first run scored on a sac fly off the bat of Gillett.

Two more walks and a wild pitch accounted for the next two runs before Colby Bushue recorded the Cougars first hit with a sharply hit ball over the bag at third for a two-out, 2 RBI double into the leftfield corner.

The fourth inning started out much like the third as the Cougars coaxed three consecutive walks out of Murfin. Drew Baldridge was then called upon in relief and Gillett greeted him a shot to left for a two-run single.

Dylan Sill reached on a dropped flyball in center to load the bases once again, and the Cougars scored their final run when Gesell tapped back to the mound and the Patoka catcher threw wildly into right after a force out at home.

The Cougars did manage four more hits off Baldridge in their last three at-bats, but couldn't string anything together to make up the remaining difference.

It was a disappointing end to a very successful season for the Cougars as they finished with an impressive 22-11 record and brought home the ninth regional title in the last eleven years.

Unfortunately, the Cougars will have to say goodbye to six very productive seniors. Dylan Sill, Tyler Gillett, Kyle Monical, Ryan Gesell, Ian King, and Shane Donoho leave behind some very big shoes fill.

Congratulations on you successes as a baseball Cougar and best wishes on your future endeavors.
