The Cougars rode the pitching of senior
Derek Harmeier and Bret Pitts drilled a walk-off single in their 3-2 victory over the visiting Altamont Indians on Monday
at Kinmundy's Lions Field.
Harmeier baffled the Indians for the first six innings before they got to him
for 2 runs in their last at-bat to tie the game, but he still got the win when the Cougars scored in their half of the seventh.
He allowed just 6 hits, three of those coming in the seventh, with no
walks and 8 strikeouts in the 93 pitch, complete game performance.
Although the defense committed 4 errors for the game, the Cougars managed to
overcome the miscues until the seventh when a throwing error allowed the tying run to score.
But then came the heroics from Brett Pitts. After consecutive walks to Fischer
Tharp and Cole Armstrong to start the inning, Colt Wilkins was called out on strikes when he fouled off a two-strike pitch
trying to sacrifice them into scoring position.
Luke Krajefska coaxed another walk to load the bases before Pitts drilled a
long fly ball that sailed over the left-fielder's head to score the game winner.
Wilkins drove in the first two Cougar runs when he connected for RBI singles
in the 1st and the 3rd. Armstrong scored both of those runs after he had singled and stole second. Pitts added another infield
single to round out the Cougar hitters with more than one hit.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they host the Comets from
Stew-Stras at 4:30 PM.
