Cougars Hold Off Altamont 7-6
The Cougars opened up the 2012 fall season with a 7-6 victory over Altamont on Monday night at Lions Field.
Not only was it the first game of the new season, it was also the first game in their new conference,
the National Trail, after many years in the Midland Trail.
Shawn Meyer picked-up right where he left off last Spring with a solid 6-inning performance on the mound and
Dan Diss did his part when he came on in the 7th to record a save.
Meyer allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, on 4 hits, 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts while Diss allowed 1 unearned run on no
hits, 2 walks, and strikeout.
Offensively, the Cougars were down 1-0 in the 2nd when sophomore Noah Powless led off the inning with a long
solo home run to right centerfield. Drake Ritter then rolled a one-out single up the middle to reach base and would later
score to give the Cougars the lead on an Altamont throwing error.
The Cougars were back at it again in the 3rd when they scored five times to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Dylan
Smith had the big hit in the inning when he drove in two with a line drive double to the alley in right center.
Altamont closed the gap to 7-5 in the 5th on a 3-run homer and tacked on another in the 7th to make things
interesting, but a routine fly ball to center would end the game with the tying run just 90 feet away.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they host the Patoka Warriors at 4:30 PM.
