Cougars Off To Solid Start
The Fall season for the 2013 baseball Cougars is off and running and, after an opening game loss to Altamont,
went on to win six straight games. After the streak, the Cougars stand at 4-1 in the NTC conference race with 2
games to play.
HIghlights to date are many. In the first conference win, the Cougars banged out 12 hits to dispose of Windsor/Stew-Stras
in 5 innings. Dylan Peters picked up the win from the mound and Tyler Ross and Kyle Bray led the offense with 5 combined hits
and 7 RBI's. One of Ross' hits was a 2-run homer in the 6th to invoke the 10-run rule.
Up next was a date with the Dieterich Movin' Maroons and the Cougars prevailed 3-2 in a pitcher's dual
that saw Peters pick up his second win of the season. He scattered 5 hits, walked just 2, and struckout 11.
Win number three came at the expense of the Beecher City Eagles. Tyler Ross pitched 6 strong innings and the
offense put up 8 runs in their first at-bat to set the tone. Bray had a big day at the plate with 2 doubles, a solo HR, and
3 RBI's.
The streak continued when the Cougars traveled to Brownstown to battle the co-op of Brownstown and St. Elmo.
Again the Cougar bats were on fire as they blasted 15 hits in the 11-3 victory. Dylan Smith led the way with a single, 2 triples,
and an RBI. Peters notched his third straight win allowing just 4 hits.
The Cougars then entered their non-conference portion of the schedule and racked up two more wins by defeating
Weber Township and Odin, but were then outdone by Teutoplis and Effingham St. Anthony to bring their overall record to 6-3.
Up next is a big week as the Cougars try to repeat as back-to-back NTC regular season champs. They
will travel to Effingham St. Anthony on Tuesday to battle the once-beaten Bulldogs for first place in the standings, and then
travel to Neoga on Thursday to close out conference play.
They will then finish off the regular season Friday when they host the North Clay Cardinals at 4:30 PM. The
postponed game with Patoka may also be played the follwoing week before the conference tournament gets underway.
