On a cold, blustery day for baseball, the Cougars braved the elements and did just enough things right to hand the
Vandalia Vandals a 5-2 defeat at Vandalia on Monday afternoon.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in their first at-bat on back-to-back singles by Brock Adams and Jason Shirley,
then Kevin Wilkins, Brian Wodtka, and Nick Jones each followed with walks to plate the first two runs.
Two more runs crossed the plate in the second when Tyler Burns doubled, Adams doubled(RBI), and Wilkins followed with
an RBI single.
The Cougars scored their final run of the day in the 4th as Adams collected his third hit(a single), Shirley reached
on an infield error, Wilkins singled, and Wodtka dumped a single into shallow centerfield. A 4-6-3 double play by the
Vandals ended the threat and the Cougars left the bases loaded for the second time in four innings.
The team defense was very sound today and Brian Wodtka picked-up his second win of the season by going the distance,
striking out 6 and walking only 2.
Brock Adams had a big day at the plate with four very loud hits, two of them doubles, and 1 RBI. Kevin Wilkins was
2 for 2, both singles, and picked-up an RBI as well.
Both the varsity and junior varsity Cougars travel to Centralia tomorrow for a double header at Jaycees Park. Both
games will be played simultaneously and are scheduled for 4:30 P.M.
