When a team gets sound pitching, plays solid defense, and generates
timely hitting, chances are they are going to be successful more times than they are not. In Saturday's round-robin Benton
Invitational, the Cougars used all of the above ingredients to walk away with two wins and a first place trophy.
In game one, the
Cougars used the long ball and line drives to the gaps, along with Brian Wodtka's 2-hit masterpiece, to thump the Eldorado
Eagles 11-1 in five innings.
The Cougars jumped
on the board in a hurry when Kevin Wilkins pounded the first home run of the day after a Jason Shirley double in the first
inning. Two more runners would cross the plate in the 4th, one coming on Nick Jones' solo homer and another on a Matt Wegener
single, followed by Matt Hicks' double down the left-field line.
Leading 4-1 in the
bottom of the 5th, the Cougars exploded for 7 runs to end the game via the 10-run rule. The big blows in the inning were RBI
doubles off the bats of Wilkins, Jones, and Wegener.
Game
two saw the Cougars matched against the host Benton Rangers and their ace on the hill, senior righthander Chris Walters.
Even though the Cougars "found the hole" only 5 times for
the game, they did manufacture a couple of runs on some aggressive baserunning and a near home run, RBI double by Wilkins,
all coming in the 3rd inning.
While Walters
was "painting the black" on the outside corner, to what seemed like nearly every batter, Jeremy Chasteen was matching him
pitch for pitch and had the Rangers dinking and doinking the ball all over the place. The Cougar defenders were also up
to the task, as they continually made routine play after routine play.
Leading 3-2
heading into the top of the 7th, Chasteen surrendered a lead-off single, but the Cougars used one of their patented pick-off
plays to nail the runner at first. With the momentum back in the Cougars favor, Chasteen easily recorded the last two outs
and the Cougars wrapped-up a very well-played day of baseball.
The Cougars
are back in action on Monday when the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis make a visit to Lions Field. Game time is scheduled
for 4:30 P.M.
