The Cougars finished out their regular season on a down note when the 27-4 Newton Eagles came to town and shut them
out by a score of 7-0.
Newton's junior righthander, Patrick Keller, played a huge role
in the outcome as he struckout 12 Cougar batters enroute to his 2 hit, 2 walk performance. Leadoff hitter Zach Wagner went
4 for 4 and clubbed a 2-run homer in the fifth to break the scoreless deadlock.
Starting pitcher Tyler Burns was at his best through 4 innings
and the Cougar defense made several plays in the field to keep the hot-hitting Eagle squad in check. But in the 5th, a one-out
error and Wagner's home run quickly make it 2-0 game. After out number two, Burns surrendered 2 of his 7 walks on the day
and after a pair of pass balls and a single, the Eagles extended their lead to four.
The Cougars could never get anything going against the tough lefty
and both of their hits came back-to-back in the 4th by way of Jason Shirley and Kevin Wilkins.
The Eagles tacked on three more in the 6th on two walks and two
singles to run their lead to 7-0 and Keller finished off the Cougars the last two innings for his complete-game
shutout.
The Cougars had a busy schedule last week when they played
four games, going 3-1 and picking up their 20th win of the season.
Monday saw the Cougars trounce Effingham St. Anthony 14-4 in five
innings and Tuesday they were stunned by the Odin Eagles by a 6-5 count.
On Thursday, they traveled to Teutopolis and came away with a
thrilling 11 inning, 8-7 win. Jeremy Chasteen pitched 6 scoreless innings of relief to get his 9th win of the season.
They then traveled to Dieterich on Friday, and after taking a
5-0 lead, watched as the Maroons scored six times in the 6th to take a one-run lead. But the Cougars bounced right back in
the top half of the 7th with two runs of their own and Chasteen shut them out in the bottom half to pick-up the save.
The Dieterich game pushed the Cougar win total to 20, marking
the fourth straight year they have achieved that mark.
Up next is a semifinal game in the Altamont regional on Saturday.
Their opponent will be the winner of the Altamont/Beecher City quarterfinal game on Wednesday and game time is set for 10:00
