Cougars Pick-up Second Win
With 9-2 Drubbing of Comets
The Stewardson-Strasburg Comets made life
miserable not once, but twice last spring when they won both meetings against the Cougars. But the faces have changed and
now, so have the results as the Cougars rudely greeted their guests from the north with a 9-2 victory at Lions Field
on Thursday afternoon.
Spencer Patton pitched 6 strong innings and Trey Garrett led the offensive charge
with a home run, a single, and 4 RBI's.
Garrett's homer came in the second inning and broke a scoreless tie to give the
Cougars an early lead. But the Comet's history is to always come back when falling behind and that they did in the top of
third with a pair of runs to tie things up.
The Cougars quickly rebounded with a 4-spot in their half of the inning as Matt
Hicks led off with a double, Brian Wodtka walked, Brock Adams was hit by a pitch, and Nick Jones hit a sac fly to center to
score the first run. Miles Yates then walked to reload the bases and back-to-back singles by Patton and Garrett pushed the
other three runs across.
The Cougars were still not done. The bottom of the fourth saw them score 3 more times
on a single by Wodtka, a fielder's choice, an RBI single by Jones, an RBI double by Yates, and a fielding miscue by the
Comets.
Patton started and worked the first six innings to get the win. He allowed only 2
runs on 2 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 7. Yates finshed things off with a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh.
Offensively, the Cougars were led by Garrett and his homer, single, and 4 RBI's.
Hicks, Wodtka, Jones, and Patton also contributed two hits apiece and Shane Landreth reached base 3 straight times via the
base on balls.
The Cougars' record now stands at 2-0 on the young season and they return to action
next Wednesday when they entertain the Eagles from St. Elmo at 4:30 P.M.
