Cougars Romp Runnin' Lions
The Cougars used a potent first-inning scoring barrage and another strong pitching
performance to easily dispose of Cisne to get their 5th conference win on Friday afternoon in Wayne County.
The 15-2 victory now puts the Cougars into next Friday's regular-season conference
championship showdown with Dieterich. The winner-takes-all in this matchup of undefeated teams.
The Cougars started this one out with a bang as six straight hitters reached
base. Tyler Burns laced a single to left to open the game and Matt Hicks reached on a fielding error. After Hicks advanced
to second on a pass ball, Brian Wodtka rifled a shot into the right-centerfield gap for a 2-run double.
Brock Adams then launched a 2-run homer into the cornfield in left and the Cougars
were quickly up 4-0. Nick Jones was hit by a pitch and Spencer Patton singled to put two more runners aboard.
Trey Garrett then reached on another Lions error and Miles Yates lofted a sac
fly to center to score Patton. Shane Landreth followed with a double off the top of the fence at the 350' mark and another
run scored to make it 7-0.
The Cougars still were not done. Burns knocked in a run with his second hit of the
inning and Hicks chased him home with a triple to the gap in right-center. Wodtka singled in Hicks before the last two outs
were made and the lead swelled to 10-0.
The Lions got one of those back in their half of the 1st, but the Cougars responded
again in the 4th for a run on an Adams double and an RBI single by Patton.
Another run for the Lions in the bottom of the 4th would be all they would get and
the Cougars used 4 hits to score 4 more runs in the 5th to close out their scoring.
Back-to-back singles by James Gile and Louis Daugherty started the frame. After
an RBI groundout by Adams, Patton and Hunter Purcell each singled to plate the final three runs of the inning.
Patton and Adams teamed-up on the mound to hold the Lions to 2 hits, while striking
out 10. Adams got credit for the win as he upped his record 2-0 for the season.
The Cougars are off until next Wednesday when the travel to Effingham St. Anthony
to take on the Bulldogs in a 4:30 P.M. contest.
