Cougars Reach Title
Game With Two Wins
The Cougars got what they wanted when they won the first two games of the MTC tournament
and that was a re-match with Dieterich, the only team to defeat them this fall.
The first round win was 10-0 victory over the Noble Wildcats and a 10-3 decision
against the Cardinals from North Clay in the semifinals assured them of that second crack at the Maroons.
Wednesday's contest with North Clay started out with a bang for the Cougars as
they scored five quick runs in the bottom of the first.
Tyler Burns led of the inning with a double and after a quick out, Brian Wodtka
walked. Brock Adams singled in the first run, before Nick Jones and Spencer Patton drilled back-to-back double to plate three
more.
After Patton moved to third on a pass ball, Miles Yates lofted a sac fly to right
to score the final run of the inning.
After the Cardinals scored their first run in the third, the Cougars got it right
back in their half of the frame when Wodtka walked for the second time, stole second, and scored on a single by Jones.
North Clay scored again in the fifth, but the Cougars tacked on three more in the
bottom half of the inning when Matt Hicks walked and Wodtka, Adams, and Jones all roped RBI doubles.
The Cougars would score another run in the sixth and the Cardianals one in the seventh
to bring the score to the final 10-3 margin.
With a complete game performance, starting pitcher Spencer Patton ran his record
to 5-0 for the season, striking out 12, walking 7, and allowing only 4 hits.
In Tuesday's game at Lions Field, the Cougars also used a quick start to dispose
of the Noble Wildcats.
One run in the second and nine in the third was all they would need in this lopsided
contest. Key hits in the innings were a pair of RBI singles by Spencer Patton, a 2-run double off the bat of Shane Landreth,
and a 2-run single from Trey Garrett.
Garrett (4-0) was the winning pitcher as he recorded 8 strikeouts in his 4 inninngs
of work. Miles Yates pitched one strong inning(3 K's) to finish things up. The duo also allowed no hits by the Wildcats
in the 5-inning shutout.
The Cougars finish the season Friday night when they face Dieterich in the tournament's
championship game at their home field. Game time is set for 7:00 P.M.
