Cougars Start Season With
Victory Over Nokomis
The Cougars started things out on the right foot as they opened their spring season with a 9-5 victory
over the visiting Nokomis Redskins on Thursday.
Nick Simmons picked-up his first win by pitching four strong innings and the Cougar hitters banged out ten
hits to lead the way.
Working as the Cougar starter, Simmons allowed no runs on one hit, no walks, and one strikeout. Wade Crain
came on in relief in the fifth, followed by Aaron Robb in the sixth, and Tanner Bushue in the seventh.
The Redskins got all of their runs in the sixth on two singles, a pair of walks, and a long grand slam home
run.
Offensively, the Cougars were led by junior secondbaseman Will Crain. After a walk to Shae Burton to
start the 4th and back-to-back doubles from Robb and Bushue, he gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead when he mashed
a three-run homer over the boards in right.
Not to be outdone, older brother Wade Crain followed that up with a two-run shot after a Devin Hall double
to make it 6-0.
The younger Crain struck again in the 5th. After Bushue laced his second double of the game, he singled sharply
through the right side to score Bushue, upping the score to
7-0.
The Cougars tacked on their final two runs in the sixth with a single, an error, a walk and consecutive first-and-third
trick plays.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they host Dieterich and DuQuoin in a three-way round-robin
affair. South Central will battle the Maroons at 10:00 AM, followed by Dieterich vs DuQuoin at approximately 12:00 noon, and
the Cougars vs DuQuoin at approximately 2:00 PM.
