Cougars Split Pair of Games
To Start Week Two

The Cougars let a big lead slip away in one game, but used a big comeback in another to keep their early-season record at .500 as they fell to Altamont 7-6 and won over Clay City 11-8.

On Monday at Altamont, the Cougars raced out to a 6-0 lead after four innings, but the Indians countered by scoring seven unanswered runs (two in the 4th and five in the 6th), then held on in the 7th to get the win.

Starting pitcher, Marcus Hicks, took the loss as he gave up all seven runs on 9 hits, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Four of those hits, along with an error and a walk, did him in the sixth when he surrendered a 6-2 lead.

Offensively, the Cougars were paced by Will Crain with a pair of singles and 2 RBI's and Aaron Robb with 2 singles and a run scored.

On Tuesday, Clay City used the long ball (a two-run HR and a solo shot) to take a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the 4th inning, but the Cougars responded with a few long balls of their own as they cracked three home runs in the bottom of the frame to jump on top 7-5.

Justin Armstrong started the inning off with solo homer to left and after Devin Hall reached on an error, Will Crain pulled the Cougars to within one when he launched a two-run shot into the trees in right-center.

After walks to Shea Burton and Zac Cain, Tanner Bushue put the Cougars on top when he blasted a long three-run homer over the boards in center.

Now with a 7-5 lead, starting pitcher Aaron Robb was relieved by Tyler Gillett, but control problems (four walks and a single) got him trouble and Clay City tied things up in their half of the fifth.

The Cougars struck again in their next at-bat when they loaded the bases for Bushue who came through again. He laced a single past second to score two and when the rightfielder misplayed the ball, another run would cross the plate to make it 10-7.

Each team scored one more run apiece to account for the final 11-8 margin and Will Crain was declared the winning pitcher who came on in relief of Gillett in the fifth.

Other notable offensive contributions came from Luke Smith who singled three times and Zac Cain who singled twice.

The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when the travel to Stew-Stras to take on the Comets at 4:30 PM.
