Cougars Win In 10
At Brownstown
The Cougars ran into a buzzsaw Thursday in the form
of Brownstown pitcher Aaron Lovett, but they managed to hang tough through nine innings to get to their bullpen in the 10th
and escape with a 10-6 win.
Lovett struck out an amazing 20 Cougar hitters, but his defense let him down numerous
times and the Cougars were able to take advantage.
After the Bombers took an early lead by scoring a run in the 2nd, the Cougars bounced
right back by scoring a run of their own in the 3rd. Shane Landreth led off the inning with a walk and Tyler Burns laid down
a perfect sac bunt to move pinch runner Louis Daugherty to second. After a Daugherty stolen base and a pop-up on the infield
for the second out, Brian Wodtka reached on an infield error and Daugherty scored on the play to tie things up.
The 4th inning saw the Cougars take the lead when Trey Garrett struck out, but reached
on a wild pitch and Blake Lane, running for Garrett, stole 2nd. Patton then laced a one-out single to right to score
Lane.
Brownstown scored 2 runs in the 5th on a 2-run homer by Miller, but the Cougars
again answered with another run in the 6th to tie it at three.
The Bombers used a pair of walks and a bunt single to load the bases against Cougars
starter Spencer Patton in the 7th, and after Miles Yates came in to relieve, Miller again delivered a 2-run triple to put
them up by two. He would later score on a pass ball and the Cougars were staring at a 3-run deficit headed into the 7th.
The Cougars didn't fold and managed to score 3 times in their last at-bat to keep
their hopes alive. Landreth led off with a single and after Burns walked, Hicks rifled his second hit of the day up the middle
to score the first run. With runners at 1st and 3rd, Lovett threw wildy to first on a pick-off attempt and Burns scampered
home with run number two. Hicks moved to second on the play, advanced to third on a pass ball, and eventually scored
on a wild pitch.
Yates and Lovett kept things scoreless through nine and entering the 10th with 120-plus
pitches under his belt, Lovett was relieved by Atwood. The Cougars quickly responded by putting runners on with another Bomber
error and a walk to Nick Jones. A pass ball moved the runners up before Patton drilled his two-run double into the right-centerfield
gap. Yates promptly singled to score Patton and would also later score on another defensive miscue by the Bombers.
Yates completed his fine performance on the hill by easily retiring the last three
Bomber hitters and the Cougars escaped with the narrow victory.
The Cougars return to action on Friday night with a 7:00 P.M. conference date as
they host the Wildcats from Noble.
